Twins Recall Zebby Matthews and Promote Carson McCusker Amid Historic Shutout Streak

The Minnesota Twins are making bold moves as they ride an incredible 13-game winning streak, and ahead of Sunday’s road game against the Milwaukee Brewers, they’ve added two new faces to their major league roster.

Zebby Matthews Returns to the Rotation

The Twins recalled right-hander Zebby Matthews from Triple-A St. Paul, inserting him directly into the rotation. The 24-year-old pitcher closed out last season in the big league rotation with a 1-4 record and 6.69 ERA over nine starts. But he has impressed this season in Triple-A, posting a 2-1 record with a 1.93 ERA, 38 strikeouts, and just 9 walks across 32⅔ innings.

Matthews will be tasked with continuing the team’s dominant pitching streak, which includes three consecutive shutouts—two of those against the Brewers. Minnesota’s pitching staff currently owns a 3.15 team ERA, ranking third in MLB.

Big League Debut for Carson McCusker

Also joining the Twins is Carson McCusker, a 6-foot-8, 250-pound outfielder who will be making his MLB debut. The 26-year-old slugger has been on fire in Triple-A, batting .350 with 10 home runs and 36 RBIs in just 38 games.

Roster Moves to Make Room

To accommodate Matthews’ promotion, the Twins placed reliever Danny Coulombe on the 15-day injured list due to a left forearm extensor strain. Coulombe has been stellar, throwing 16⅔ scoreless innings this season.

To make room for McCusker on the 40-man roster, the Twins shifted rookie Luke Keaschall to the 60-day injured list. Keaschall fractured his right forearm on April 25 against the Los Angeles Angels.

A Historic Shutout Run

The Twins are currently riding a 33-inning shutout streak, the longest in franchise history since relocating to Minnesota in 1961. The only longer streaks came when the team was known as the Washington Senators, with the most recent of those dating back to 1913.

With Matthews stepping in and McCusker debuting, the Twins aim to keep the momentum alive in what has been one of their most exciting stretches in recent memory.
