In a hard-fought game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Indianapolis Colts, key moments on both sides led to the Colts ultimately pulling away with a victory. The Steelers managed to rally in the second half but were unable to complete the comeback.
The second half opened with a spark for the Steelers when Calvin Austin III's 30-yard punt return set up good field position. However, Pittsburgh's drive faltered when quarterback Justin Fields slipped while trying to escape pressure, fumbling the ball after being hit by Chris Lammons. Lammons also recovered the ball, leading to a significant 22-yard loss and giving the Colts possession at the Steelers’ 42-yard line. Despite a big sack from Cam Heyward and Beanie Bishop, Indianapolis failed to capitalize as kicker Matt Gay missed a 54-yard field goal.
The Steelers responded with a 38-yard pass from Fields to wide receiver George Pickens, which positioned Fields for a 5-yard touchdown run, cutting the Colts' lead to 17-10 late in the third quarter. The Colts, however, extended their lead again with a drive that was boosted by penalties and clutch third-down conversions. Joe Flacco found tight end Drew Ogletree for a 15-yard touchdown, making the score 24-10.
Pittsburgh refused to back down, as running back Najee Harris ripped off a 33-yard gain on a screen pass, further aided by a roughing the passer penalty. Fields capped off the drive with another rushing touchdown, bringing the score to 24-17.
Indianapolis answered with a field goal drive, highlighted by Jonathan Taylor's 21-yard run before he left the game due to an ankle injury. Gay’s 35-yard field goal put the Colts up 27-17.
The Steelers needed a quick response, and Fields delivered, throwing an 8-yard touchdown pass to Pat Freiermuth. This brought the Steelers within 27-24 with just over four minutes remaining. Cam Heyward then came up with a crucial sack on Flacco, forcing a Colts punt and giving Pittsburgh one last chance.
However, a costly mistake occurred when rookie center Zach Frazier snapped the ball before Fields was ready, resulting in a 12-yard loss. Fields took responsibility for the miscommunication, explaining that he was still reading the defensive setup when the ball was snapped. The miscue ended the Steelers’ final drive, and Indianapolis held on for the win.
Jonathan Taylor finished with 88 rushing yards on 21 carries, helping the Colts control the clock and keep the Steelers’ offense at bay. Cam Heyward led the defensive effort for Pittsburgh with six tackles and a sack, though the Steelers struggled early in stopping the run.
The game was a gritty battle, but ultimately, the Colts made the critical plays needed to secure a 27-24 victory, while Pittsburgh’s comeback fell just short.
